NOTICE to MAGIC USERS: Effective May 16, 2008, the image web server (used for raster images, like the 1934 aerial photography) will be going through maintenance and upgrades. This is likely to take several days as we implement new software and presentation of the image data we serve. We understand the importance of this data to many of you. We will work as expediently as possible to get the image server up and running. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes. To view the Connecticut State Library's 1934 images, please visit their website

  • Welcome to the Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC) at the University of Connecticut. MAGIC, the University of Connecticut's Map Library, collects maps, atlases, gazetteers, aerial photographs, and digital geospatial data, as well as resources on the history and current state of cartography.

Even though MAGIC provides spatial data for use in many GIS programs, the staff do not provide cartographic ("map-making") services. However, the staff are able to provide basic help with GIS questions, concerning the data on the MAGIC Web site.

MAGIC has received an original Clark and Tackabury 1859 topographical wall map of Connecticut, of which only a handful of copies are known to exist. Mrs. Diana Levy generously donated the map in honor of her husband, Colonel Levy, who grew up in Abingdon, CT, before entering U.S. Army, Military Intelligence. He purchased the map at a yard sale some time after World War II. Following his death in 2003, his will stipulated that his executors find an appropriate home for the map “somewhere in Connecticut.” MAGIC was the lucky recipient. The 6' x 4' map was photographed and the negative scanned to produce this image. Donations to conserve this remarkable map are appreciated.

The Connecticut State Library & MAGIC have scanned and georeferenced the mosaiced set of the 1934 Fairchild Aerial Survey. The actual aerial photos are owned by and stored at The Connecticut State Library. Thanks to Ben Smith for his georeferencing work.

Read the story of the imagery from the Sunday, March 31, 1935, Hartford Courant. This was the first state-sponsored survey in the U.S., and it is the first statewide historical aerial survey available on the Internet.
