Description:
Abstract:
This is a 1:24,000-scale datalayer of line features extending to the limit of all USGS quadrangles that cover the State of Connecticut. It is a single-line model of Connecticut's hydrography indicating hydrologic connectivity and direction of flow. Since this datalayer was derived from the hydrography datalayer based the U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graph Files (DLG) for the 1:24,000 scale Connecticut quadrangle maps published between 1969 and 1984, it may not reflect current surface water geography. The network datalayer was developed from several separate elements. It is a combination of 1) single-line natural perennial or intermittant rivers and streams from the hydrography datalayer, 2) computer generated centerlines for the lakes and rivers that appear as polygons on the same hydrography datalayer, 3) digitized lines that provide hydrologic connectivity through marshes, where water is channeled underground, or where for any reason the actual stream channel does not appear on the USGS quadrangle but can be reasonably inferred. It does not include man-made features such as aqueducts or canals, centerlines for ponds shown without a single-line stream connection (isolated ponds) or for marsh headwaters. For lake headwaters the line begins at the center of the far shore. Wherever the drainage pattern formed a loop (i.e. a stream that forks as it enters a lake or a braided stream) a reasonable path was selected and the extra lines omitted. The purpose of this network is to represent the natural surface water flow throughout Connecticut in a datalayer suitable for modeling. Within each major drainage basin the surface water is connected and all lines are oriented from upstream to downstream. Hydrography in this form is new at DEP. It is provided as a first step toward hydrologic modeling and analysis.
