Abstract:
The Waterbody Names Data layer (WATERNAM) contains four categories (ARC/INFO annotation subclasses) of waterbody names (BAY, LAKE, STRM, and SWAMP). The BAY, LAKE, and STRM categories are based on named features in the Hydrography Master Archive Data Layer (HYDROM), which were derived from the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) data layer and additional information compiled by DEP. The SWAMP category was derived exclusively from GNIS. Cartographically, the waterbody name annotation is similar to that which appears on the U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle maps and is intended for use at map scales ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:50,000. Barely legible at 1:100,000 scale.
Purpose:
The Waterbody Names annotation is intended to support cartographic products (plotting base maps) and some categories, identify features represented in the Hydrography and Town Master Archive Data Layers (HYDROM and TOWNM).
