Abstract:
This datalayer is a conversion of the boundaries for U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7½ minute topographic quadrangle maps originally published in the Connecticut State Plane Coordinate System, North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27) to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). This transformation process is what is commonly referred to as a NADCON conversion from NAD 27 to NAD 83.
Purpose:
Use this datalayer to identify the geographic areas and corresponding geographic features that appear on each of the published quadrangle maps. The polygon boundaries in this datalayer correspond with outlines of the printed quadrangle maps. This datalayer may be used to clip or extract features from other datalayers that fall exactly within the geographic extent of the published USGS quadrangle (paper) maps. As shown below the polygon areas in this datalayer represent the same geographic extents depicted on the USGS 7½ minute topographic quadrangle maps. The USGS topographic quadrangle maps are based on a grid interval of 7½ minutes of latitude and longitude. These latitude / longitude values are printed at the corners of every quadrangle map. For example, the southwest corner of the quadrangle above is 73º 45' 00" W longitude, 41º 45' 00" N latitude. These latitude / longitude values correspond to two different geographic locations on the surface of the Earth when represented in NAD 27 and NAD 83. Consequently, there are two available USGS quadrangle index datalayers. NAD 83 Quad Index, Index.shp is a true NAD 83 quadrangle index that was generated by projecting the quadrangle corner latitude / longitude coordinates directly to the Connecticut State Plane Coordinate System NAD 83. NAD 27 Quad Index, Index27.shp, was generated by first projecting the quadrangle corner latitude / longitude coordinates to the Connecticut State Plane Coordinate System NAD 27 and then later converting them to NAD 83 using the NADCON method.
