This is a datalayer of Connecticut address-ranged street network segments derived from the 2000 Census TIGER/Line files. It is a line Shapefile that includes one line for each street network segment. Address-ranged street network databases can be used for a variety of purposes, including address-match geocoding and network analysis. Attributes for each segment include all of the Record Type 1 attributes for TIGER/Line segments in the TIGER system. The Center has added twelve fields to the attribute table to enhance the database. A legend field based on Census Feature Class Codes (CFCCs) was added to identify major highways, secondary highways, access ramps, local roads, and thoroughfares for mapping purposes. A length field reports the segment length in feet. The TIGER right and left zip code fields are numeric fields. The Center added two character fields for right and left zip codes to preserve the leading zero in Connecticut zip codes so that these fields can be used as zones for address-matching purposes or to identify street segments in particular zip codes. The TIGER attributes identify left and right county subdivisions based on FIPS codes. In Connecticut, towns, corresponding to Census county subdivisions, are more widely used. The Center added left and right town number fields (numeric and character) and left and right town name fields (upper/lower and all capitals) so that these fields can be used as zones for address-matching purposes or to identify street segments in a particular town. The data source is the U.S. Census Bureau. Census TIGER/Line files for each of Connecticut's eight counties were downloaded from the Census web site and processed by the University of Connecticut Center for Geographic Information and Analysis to create a single, statewide datalayer of street segments in Connecticut State Plane Coordinates NAD83. Map units are feet. The data collection scale for TIGER/line segments varies depending on the source. For Connecticut, most segments were drawn from 1980 GBF/DIME files. An on-line version of this database is available for downloading at the MAGIC web site of the University of Connecticut Babbage Library (magic.lib.uconn.edu). An on-line version of the same database in geographic coordinates (map units are decimal degrees) is also available for downloading at the MAGIC web site. The University of Connecticut Center for Geographic Information and Analysis prepares databases from the public extracts released by the Census Bureau and makes them available to the public as a service to the University community and to the state.
