Abstract:
This is a 1:24,000-scale datalayer that, when used with the Roads and Trails datalayer, closely reproduces the standard cartographic symbology established by the USGS to depict the roads and trails that appear on the published USGS 7½ Mintute Topgraphic Quadrangle Maps. The Buffered Roads datalayer only includes the linework for highways, local roads, and dirt roads on the topo maps that are double lined. This linework was generated by buffering the centerlines of these linear features in the Roads and Trails datalayer by 40 feet and classifying them as to whether they should be represented with a dashed or solid black line. Always use Buffered Roads with the Roads and Trails datalayer and be sure to symbolize it with a special ArcView Legend File named Roadfill.avl, located in the same directory as the Roads and Trails datalayer. This ArcView Legend File symbolizes the Roads and Trails datalayer so that it "fills in" the Buffered Roads with solid and dashed red lines and displays hiking trails as dashed single lines.
