Abstract:
This is a 1:24,000-scale datalayer that includes all of the hydrography features that appear on the U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps that cover the State of Connecticut. It includes perenial and intermittent lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers, streams, marshes, dams, and drainage ditches. Hydrography is comprised of two Shapefiles with line and polygon features. Both Shapefiles should be used together. Lines and polygons are classified according to hydrography arc code and hydrography polygon code, respectively. The polygon Shapefile fills in open water streams such as the Connecticut River, large waterbodies like Long Island Sound, and marsh areas. The line Shapefile mostly includes single line perenial and intermittent streams, shorelines, drainage ditches, and dams. Lines that defined portions of named streams are assigned a stream number. Polygons that define the extent of named streams and lakes are assigned a lake number or stream number. Other polygons that represent named bays and harbors along the Connecticut coast are assigned a bay number, harbor number, and sound number. This datalayer is based on the lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers that appear on the U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps that cover the State of Connecticut. In digital form, the hydrography boundary information was derived from the U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graph Files (DLG) for the 1:24,000 scale Connecticut quadrangle maps published between 1969 and 1984.
