Abstract:
This is the 1:24,000-scale datalayer that includes all levels of natural drainage basins in Connecticut, including major, regional, subregional, local, etc. This basin datalayer extends beyond the Connecticut boundary to include the headwaters of every basin that flows into the state, except for the Connecticut River basin. This includes two Shapefiles with line and polygon features. The line Shapefile delineates major, regional, subregional, local, and other smaller impoundment/stream segment basin boundaries. The polygon Shapefile includes over 7,000 basin polygons, each one identified by basin number that can be up to 13 digits long such as 6000-00-1+*, 4300-00-1+L1, or 6002-00-2-R1. Both Shapefiles should be used together, but you can just use the line Shapefile if you only want to cartographically represent the basin boundary hierarchy or just the polygon Shapefile if you are interested in drainage basin numbers for certain areas, etc. Individual lines are classified according to drainage basin arc code. In addition to the full 13 digit drainage basin number, each basin polygon has a 1 digit major basin number, 2 digit regional basin number, and 4 digit subregional basin number, and a 7 digit local basin number (e.g. 6400-00). The drainage basin boundaries were originally delineated by interpreting the contour elevation lines and the hydrography network appearing on the 7 minute U.S. Geological Survey quadrangle maps that cover Connecticut and published between 1969 and 1984. This work was conducted by the Environmental and Geographic Information Center (formally the Natural Resources Center) of DEP.
