Under the Windows Start button go to Programs> HP Deskscan 2.3 > HP Deskscan II
If the following screen does not appear then you
should turn on the scanner and restart the computer.
Place the photograph on scanner. The top corner of
the photo should be placed by the green arrow on the top right of the scanner.
Remember that the format of the scanner is 8.5 x 14, therefore a small portion
of the photograph will be cropped. Try to ensure that the portion removed is not
vital to your project.
Press the preview button on the Deskscan software.
An image of your photo should appear in the white screen.
Set the type to Black and White photo.
Set the path to the desired DPI. Before chosing a
DPI be sure to read the page on
size vs resolution.
There is a thin lined box that is paced over your
image. This box shows the area to be scanned. If you place your cursor over an
edge of this box you can click and resize the box by dragging the edge. Make
sure the box covers enough of the photo for the goals of your project. The
larger the box the greater the file size.
Press the yin-yang symbol
in the middle of the control area. This lets the software automatically adjust
the contrast and brightness given the area you have selected to be scanned. If
you want to adjust the contrast and brightness manually, do so by sliding the
boxes found on either side of the yin-yang symbol.
When you have finished all your adjustments, press
Save the image to the Desktop. Click on the down arrow next to
Choose TIFF 5.0. This will automatically put a
.tif extension on the end of your image name. Files will be saved in the
directory ...\Desktop\Temp and will be erased daily. You can use Windows95
naming conventions for your file name unless you are going to use this image on
a Windows 3.1, Macintosh machine, or in ARC/INFO or other GIS software. If you
are thinking of saving in a different format please read about
image formats and software.
